The Land of Luxury

A look inside of Yoga Public located at 280 Fort St.

“Canada’s largest yoga playground”

From the moment I walked in to Yoga Public I was impressed. Que the ambience, and might I add that Yoga Public did it well. The lobby is serene, nice dim lighting and a very earthy feel. Now don’t get me wrong when I say earthy (by earthy I mean in the tones and textures used in the room) beautiful browns and greens, with wood accents and wooden stools to sit down and take off your shoes.

The staff at the front desk directly aligned with the feeling the room gave off… calm and serene. As I followed my friend into the change room I was in a little bit of shock, “Is this really a yoga place?” I asked puzzled.

The change rooms at Yoga Public look something like the dressing rooms at any of the major spas in Winnipeg. Beautiful spacious rain head showers, lockers with technological codes to secure your items, products and hair tools to use and beautiful makeup and hair stations with the perfect lighting around the outside of the mirror. As we put all of our stuff away and rushed downstairs (we may have been a little late) the facility was massive. Multiple studios for both yoga classes and TRX training classes.

Que the hot yoga studio. A slow moving sliding door and curtain separate the outside world from the studio. Inside are beautiful bamboo floors and ambient lighting in the corner so that you are able to see the room. The teacher was brilliant, she had a soothing voice but also kept pushing and motivating the class throughout the 60 minutes. As we flowed through different challenging poses the heat increased and so did the music. Soft exotic music played in the background which proved not to be distracting but instead uplifting and motivating.

After the class was done and we slowly lingered out of the studio my friend gave me a tour around. All in all Yoga Public offers its customers yoga and fitness classes with a touch of luxury… essentially you are getting what you pay for.

A standard membership at Yoga Public costs approximately $140 a month, but is flex if you are a student or first time user of the facility. A drop in is $20 dollars which includes the class fee, access to towels and water, and full access to showers and everything in the changing rooms.

I encourage every yogi out there to visit Yoga Public. It is truly an elevated experience that you cannot get anywhere else in the city. There’s something about a rain head shower after a hot yoga class that just says “where do I sign up”.

Sick Kicks

I am a shoeaholic. My favorite shoes to buy? Nike workout shoes. Name a colour and I have probably owned a pair of Nikes in that colour.

It isn’t the iconic brand name that has me hooked, although Nike is doubtably the most popular running shoe on the market. What draws me to these shoes is both the style and comfort that they provide. Over the years the Nike brand has definitely evolved, experimenting with bold and very eye catching colours and I LOVE it. It wasn’t until recently that Nike came out with their training shoes (my favourites). The shoes are so lightweight which is what I like so much about them. Whether I am running on a machine indoors or running on the pavement outdoors I want a shoe that provides me with comfort. Although they are very lightweight, the padding inside the shoe is the perfect amount. The gel sole of the shoe provides me with added comfort especially when I am running outside. Landing on pavement when you run can be hard on your joints especially I find my knees and ankles. These shoes help to “soften” the blow of running outside.

The heel is also slightly elevated which is important. Keeping the heel elevated allows you to have extra cushion with every step. The shoe also has ventilated sides which is handy for summer runs.

The shoes above were my go-to travel shoes. I walked all over Europe in these and there was never a point where my feet felt sore or uncomfortable. Whether I was hiking up cliffs or just walking the streets of a city these shoes were perfect.

I must be honest though it was the colour of these specific shoes that drew me in, there is something about creating a workout outfit. Today, every store exhibits such bold prints and colours rather than very plain, boring workout gear. I love to pair these shoes with cropped running tights and a bright tank that goes well with the colour scheme of the shoe.

Here’s a look at other bold prints and colours Nike has:

Looking for a new pair in Winnipeg? Try looking at Sportcheck. They offer a wide selection of training shoes in a bunch of bright colour perfect for spring.

Want to be spring ready for the outdoors? Add a pair of Nike trainers to your wardrobe. They will be worth every cent.

It’s All in the Name

Awesome. If there was one word to describe Awesome Hot Yoga I think they nailed it on the head. I have tried out many different facilities in Winnipeg to do hot yoga and Awesome is definitely one of the better ones in the city. The staff are friendly and inviting. When I first got a membership there with a good friend of mine, Alison, they treated her like family. They made sure to treat their clients like one of their own, which I noticed right away. From my first visit up to my most recent visit I could tell that they welcome new clients in very graciously and I think that helps in created an AWESOME environment.

Secondly, they have amazing facilities. Looking at their building from the outside (677 Stafford Street) I wasn’t sure what to expect, but jeeze do they have a lot of real estate. The change rooms are large and welcoming. They have nice touches and amenities that I think anyone who workouts outside of their home can really appreciate.

Their studios are also a great size. Nothing worse than going to a hot yoga class and feeling like you are packed in their sweating right underneath someone else. You had lots of room to move. Another thing that I liked was that they have soft music playing in the background. I find music helps to set a mood, and also acts as a bit of a motivator for myself.

So if you are looking for a new place to try hot yoga I would highly recommend checking out Awesome. Did I also mention they offer barre classes? Oh yes, just another thing that makes Awesome Hot Yoga so awesome… like I said it’s all in the name.

Knead It Out

Yesterday I went for my first massage in over 16 months. Ask me how it felt? AMAZING.

As I was laying on the massage bed, with my massage therapist kneading his thumbs into my lower back all I could think was how beneficial this was for my body. With most physical activity comes pain. Regardless of if you know what your doing, it is inevitable that there will come a time when you either tweak a muscle or pull something to the point where you need to take a break.

A couple weeks ago when I was at the gym, putting down weights on the floor I dropped the weight and could feel a slight pull in my neck. It left my neck feeling sore and stiff for the next two days which prevented me from going to the gym. Although I don’t often got for massages I do find the after effects to be very important.

Yesterday I tried out a new massage therapist facility in St. Vital.

Rave Massage.

Here’s the three things that I enjoyed most about Rave, and why I highly recommend you check them out the next time you are interested in getting a massage.

1. The Atmosphere

Calm, clean and serene. The facility was clean and had beautiful branding throughout, nice calming serene blues and browns filled the entire entrance. The rooms were even better. Simple oak doors entered you into a dimly lit room with a comfortable heated bed to start your massage, simple light music filled the air with a small candle flicking in the corner of the room.

2. The Pressure

Nothing worse then a massage therapist who isn’t willing to dig into your muscles to truly give you the proper effects of the massage. The massage therapist I had gave perfect pressure. He made sure to use hard enough pressure to knead out any knots that were in my neck and lower back.

3. The End

There is nothing worse then feeling rushed, and at Rave they instead made you feel comfortable. There was never a point in time where I felt the massage was getting rushed, or that I was being ushered out. After the massage was over I was given a lot of time to get ready and leave and was waited by my massage therapist outside. The receptionists at the front were pleasant and helpful and did not put any pressure on my friend and I to book another appointment.

So if your looking for a great massage place in the city, check out Rave Massage on St. Mary’s Road. Great atmosphere, great massages, and great staff.

Add a little hemp

I’m a smoothie kinda girl, and when i mean kinda – I mean it is the best part of my morning routine. I’m not picky as to what I put in it, usually just whatever is in the fridge that’s good. It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that a good friend of mine introduced me to a new ingredient I should add to my morning routine – hemp hearts.

So I took her advice and haven’t looked back since. I went to the grocery store to pick them up, a little shocked at the price but went ahead with it.

What has it added to my smoothie?

Texture, flavour and health benefits.

The texture is similar to chia seeds in that they are grainy but not grainy enough to get in the way. I prefer when my smoothie has more texture than less as sometimes the blended mixture is too soft for my personal preference.

The flavour is great, what I like about hemp hearts is they cut the sweetness in my smoothie. Depending on what fruits I use, the ones that are naturally very sweet sometimes make the smoothie too sweet to drink, like strawberries. By adding hemp hearts into the smoothie, it cuts the sweetness and makes it the perfect flavour to drink.

The health benefits are amazing. Hemp hearts contain omegas, digestible proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibres. Hemp puts good things in your body that sometimes you may not be getting elsewhere.

So next time you reach for your blender, pick up a pouch of hemp hearts to add in.

You won’t be disappointed.

Happy smoothie making followers!

The Perfect Songs to Sweat to

Everytime I workout regardless of my motivation or goals, there are three things I always need. Cold water, a high ponytail and some good beats. Nothing is worse then a silent workout. My favourite music… country. But everyone knows that country isn’t exactly the kind of music that gets you amped when your on the 5 of 8 km. So what I have come up with is 8 songs that will get you amped, motivated and excited to finish your workout.

The “Work You” Playlist:

  1. Roses (feat. ROZES)- The Chainsmokers
  2. My House – Flo Rida
  3. 679 (feat. Monty) – Fetty Wap
  4. How Deep is Your Love – Calvin Harris & Disciples
  5. Lean On – Major Lazer & DJ Snake
  6. The Motto (feat. Lil Wayne) – Drake
  7. Titanium – Sia
  8. Sorry- Justin Bieber

Next time your gearing up for the gym, be sure to pack this playlist in your bag.

Happy working out!

Just Juice

Three of the cold pressed juices available at Green Carrot juice company located in Osborne Village (132 Osborne St.).

There has to be something said about nutrition in the form of a juice. Since I have never been a coffee drinker, tea and water have always been my go to beverage. The benefits of water and tea are inevitable but don’t leave me feeling much of anything. But what if a cold juice could be kneaded into your everyday routine? I thought about this as I drove past Green Carrot juice company a couple weeks back.

So I went in and figured I would give it a go. The knowledgable staff helped me to find what I was looking for. Something about a green beverage made entirely of celery, kale and whatever else is green seemed more like a third/fourth time beverage. So I went for three different juices that offered different nutrients and health benefits to the body.

A big positive about the juices? The fact that the ingredients are listed on the front of the bottle, no hidden additives or anything to worry about. Something about natural flavours is very satisfying.

My plan was then to use these three juices in one day: one for breakfast, one for lunch, one for dinner. See how full they left me and how they made my body feel day of and of course the next day. Safe to say I was surprised at how satisfying these juices could be for my body.

I also think something should be said about the simple and authentic branding that the company has created with their bottles. A+ all around.

Here is my breakdown of the three juices showcased above:

Breakfast: Bliss

A simple delicious mix between almond milk, a cold iced beverage and sweet cinnamon. It’s main ingredients: almond milk, vanilla, cinnamon, cane sugar and medjool dates. For myself I always tend to have a light breakfast so something like this was satisfying it gave me a little bit of a wake up, but also felt refreshing and light.

It’s all in the name: Summer Squeeze – a true, refreshing taste of summer.

Lunch: Summer Squeeze

I love anything with a citrus flavour. Some of my favourite flavours are grapefruit and lemon so naturally I gravitated to a juice with this in mind. Summer Squeeze was incredibly refreshing and light, even in the middle of winter something about it tasted like a nice summer day out on the patio. Its main ingredients: strawberry, watermelon, pineapple, mint.

Dinner: 24 Carrot

Okay, so a juice that is bright orange made me skeptical. Carrot is the main ingredient? I asked the woman at the store. Yes, there is probably a decent part of me that was intimidated by a beverage with the main ingredient being a carrot, but I was pleasantly surprised. The different fruits that are in the juice help to combine for a tasty, but very different flavour. The carrot is very present in the juice but in a good way. It wasn’t overpowering but instead tasted very nutritious. I guess perception is reality, but as I drank 24 Carrot I felt like I was drinking something great for my body. It’s main ingredients: carrot, orange, apple, lemon, pineapple, turmeric.

Take the time to try out the world of cold pressed juices. You won’t be disappointed. Green Carrot juice company offers high quality, nutritional juices perfect for any time of the day. For more information on the company, and other juices and products that they offer visit their website:
